Okay, I don't really talk here, but I feel like there's something that needs to be said.

There's been a lot of discussion lately about whether or not the recent EW photoshoot with Emma D'arcy and Olivia Cooke is queerbait. And, unfortunately, I'm here to tell you that, based on the evidence we have so far, it absolutely is.

I've heard two major points arguing it isn't. First, that these are two real people and real people cannot queerbait, and I'm sorry but we're not talking about two everyday people living their everyday lives. These are two actors doing a photoshoot to PROMOTE a show. The marketing team probably approved this. It's part of a marketing campaign.

The second argument I've heard is that the queerness is subtextual and therefore House of the Dragon is not baiting queer audiences, because there is queer content in the actual show. Now, we can chase our own tails forever about what constitutes subtext, but the point is that it's very subjective. I, personally, agree that Alicent and Rhaenyra's relationship cannot be read in any way other than through queer lenses, and the fact that the casting director chose at least two queer actors to portray them adds to this reading, much to the credit of the HOTD team. However, there are many people who don't see it that way.

The largely cis and heterosexual audience is not perceiving Rhaenyra and Alicent as queer. What's more, the majority of people watching this show do not read press releases and actor interviews, therefore have no clue that the writers and actors have commented on Rhaenicent having a queer undertone. This is not an explicit textual representation of a wlw relationship.

For the record, I think that's okay. Not every story needs to be out and proud, so to say. As a matter of fact, it would bother me very much if the show started using anachronistic terms to describe the characters' experiences. But the point I'm trying to make is that as long as the queerness remains subtextual, the wider audience will not be aware of it, and thus the only people who will understand it for what it is are the same people this marketing campaign is intended for: queer people.

This is not an indictment of any sort. I've publicly stated a few days ago that this will not stop me or anyone else from shipping Rhaenicent. Actually, I'm enjoying the content we're getting very much (my phone wallpaper is currently an image from said interview), but not acknowledging that this is what is happening feels dishonest.

it seems to me like you really don’t like HotD and a lot of the actors in it to the point of saying stuff about on set stuff that can’t even be proven. Why keep watching it if you have such strong negative opinions on it?

See, it might be hard for people to grasp on this site, but you can like something and also be incredibly critical of it.

Example:

I love the character of Alicent Hightower, Olivia Cooke is such a great actress that she elevated my being a fan of that character in the book to me becoming super attached to that character in the show. I have a HD custom made Alicent Hightower wallpaper on this every computer I'm using. I see her face every day, she has become a fixture in my day to day life. If there was a really good poster of Alicent that WB was licensing, I'd buy it, frame it, and hang it up. At some point I'm gonna buy an Alicent and Criston figures and display them somewhere on my shelf. That's how much I love that character.

I also think that Olivia Cooke is near functionally retarded and might be the most full of shit actor or actress I've heard speak in my life - And that is coming from someone who listened to Jessica De Gouw podcast interviews in 2020 - my Vietnam - and was a fan of Lena Headey since I was eight years old.

Liking something or someone's work does not mean that you like every aspect of them.

I defend Ryan Condal's writing constantly, it's actually really good. In fact Condal might be one of the best writers working in prestige television - bar none.

Where I come down on him is his inability to put his foot down as a showrunner and assert control over other aspects of HOTD. Instead of reining in Sara Hess, stop her from destroying Aegon's character for her bullshit narrative, he went right along with it and now his inaction has backed them into a corner, in which it will be nearly impossible to rescue his character.

I'm hard on it, cause I love it, and if I didn't care, I wouldn't say anything.

And first hand accounts protected by promises of anonymity is not the same thing as "No Proof".

People ask, I give them approximations of what I've heard. I don't shotgun that shit all over the internet.

I Know Who Killed me Chapter 1

it was Monday October 30, 2017 a day before Charlie Summers would meet his Demise. the air was crisp the leaves orange, the perfect setting. fourteen year old Charlie has nothing to worry about other than THE night of the year where we only care about being a skeleton or a superhero and even though he was way too old to still be trick or treating it was a tradition he and his four close friends had every single halloween. But this Year would be different.....

Three out of four Best Friends would go home and one would be murdered. on Wednesday November 1, 2017, the town of Anoka will be asking who killed Charlie Summers?

there's an alarm sounding on the dresser next to Charlie's bed he's tired but he knows he needs to wake up now or his mother will be aggravated. groaning he grabs his phone it's second hand iPhone 4 that he got from his cousin for his fourteenth birthday, the screen is cracked but you can still see the wallpaper , it's a picture of Charlie and his three best friends: Liam, Olivia, and Ethan who was grade a head of them. 

Mondays were always such shit days but not this week, this Monday meant they were only a day away from Halloween which is the best day of the year, incase you don't know. he jumped out of bed and started to get ready.

Getting ready Charlie grabs his MacBook laptop and starts youtube he's currently watching youtube art hoe look books and you-tubers who vlog their lives living in London or new york, two places he hope to live one day. but he's bored and can't focus so he goes to Spotify to find a fall playlist specifically a halloween play list, hits play than jumps in the shower. 

his closet consists of Levi 501s bright wind breakers and vans that range from classic black to his most worn pair, a checkered print with a rose embroidered on the side. he grabs his pumpkin spice lotion he recently bought at bath and body works shopping with his mom and sisters. he knows it's girly but he's never been one for masculinity. grabbing a yellow top and a pair of Levi's he tucks in the shirt grabs a black belt and rolls the cuffs of the jeans to show his nike socks, and finally grabbing a purple and green windbreaker and his checkered vans he's ready for school. his yellow kanken bag is hanging on the chair of his desk ready to pick up on his way out.

downstairs his mom is cooking breakfast but he doesn't eat much as of recently, he gained a couple pounds over the summer and is now self conscious. his mom has a iced coffee ready for him, he sips it and grabs a banana on his way out, but he throws it in the dumpster as he walks down the drive way. the cold of a 7 am morning in the fall hits his face and it's a feeling he will never forget.

"Charlie?" a familiar voice shouts from across the street it's Liam who lives a block over from the Summers, he's wearing a white oversized sweater and baggy 'mom jeans' with dark green converse and of course he's wearing a Kanken bag as well,  matter of fact almost everyone at Anoka Middle are.

not surprised a art school is obsessed with The Art Hoe Aesthetic, a term that started in 2015 from a poc creator on Tumblr. 

the boys ride the same bus together and a few stops away Olivia and Ethan get on they live next door to each other. and they are the other two of this core four friend group. Ethan is a grade higher than them but they all still hang out together. the bus ride is about a ten minute ride to Anoka Middle outside is a colourful pallet of orange, red, and yellow. everyone here clearly uses tumblr and watches you tubers like OkaySage and Haley Morales; my favourite is Eris the Planet, and Shane Dawson specifically his Conspiracy Videos. 

the bell rings and everyone rushes  inside to make sure we aren't late for first period.
